Finding Quiet in the Craziness of Life

Do you ever just have those day where your innards just feel like a six-way tug-of-war is going on inside? (Yes I just said innards.) Today was like an awesome version of it, but my stress levels have gone past the good stage and into the bad stage.

You know what I’m talking about? This morning I got several good emails that meant I could move forward on a project I’ve been really excited about. The response I got was way better than I expected, so my day got 500% better. But then all the “Okay, MOVE,” stress that went with that, plus planning for my trip on Tuesday, plus trying to do school, plus having to hang with the b**ch of Ebay today have gotten me all in a tizzy. A good one, because I’m excited about everything (except statistics), but I just need space.

My phone has been going off every other second because the girls and I are trying to figure out the last minute details for our trip. And I meant to be active on social media today because I’ve been trying to get better about that. And my 98 on my Bloglovin icon on my browser isn’t helping either.

Just as Statistics was starting to become more than I could handle, I stopped. I needed a break. I needed to just relax, do things I love, and feel like things are quiet again. I should probably throw my phone into my closet and leave it there for the next 30 minutes, actually.

Do you have these moments? I’m starting a personal challenge this week to journal regularly. I’m going to Colorado with some of the best people I’ve ever met in my life and I get to meet one of my heroes and I get to meet my coach and I get to meet new CollegePlus students and I get to experience Denver and I get to work on CPE3 stuff too! Like this will be one of the most memorable weeks of my life! So I’m giving myself the goal to journal at least three times this week. I think it will be good for me. I don’t normally keep on keeping on with journaling. It’s one of those things my mom always made me do that I hated. But I want to do it now to let myself relax, recoop, and remeasure my strength (how’s that for alliteration?).

What do you do to escape from the stress (good or bad) of life?

If you’re going to journal too, let me know in the comments below! I’ll do an update on how it went next week.

And of course, stay tuned for my new blog that will be launched hopefully next Wednesday! I just bought the domain today, so now I just have to build it. Can’t wait for you guys to see it!

Usually, when people do these “Lately, On Instagram” posts, it’s all their stuff, right? Well this was so good I just had to share. I’m pretty picky about who I follow in Instagram, I like to get inspired when I scroll down my feed, not ashamed for humanity by all of my sisters’ “friends”. I’ve been following Paul Octavious for a while now, and I really like his stuff! I saw this the other day and I was agape with amazement. What an amazing idea! I’m still working on making my instagram feed good enough for this, but if you’re proud of your instagram, or even your photography in general, this is an amazing idea!

The Power of the LIST

Last year, I thoroughly discovered the power of the list. Being a CollegePlus student, I’ve experienced more than my fair share of what they call “Action Steps” (which that reminds me, I need to look at mine for this week again) and sometimes I like to make fun of them. However, I’ve been realizing over the last couple weeks that I implement “Action Steps” all the freaking time. This semester, I’ve had a whopping To-Do list every single day that I habitually write out before I start my day. Last semester, I started listing my goals (both long-term and short-term) and found that after doing so, my motivation levels shot straight up. Like nothing else I’ve ever found, lists provide a strong sense of direction. And as people in this day and age who usually have more goals than we probably admit, it’s important for us to have direction. Distraction lurks with every click. No lie.

There are three different kinds of lists that I find myself utilizing regularly.

The Power of the List

The first one is a “Goal List”. If you’ve been around for a minute, you know that people are constantly talking about long-term and short-term goals. Well, I’m here to tell you, they are worth the hype, but only if you’re all in. I’ve tried making lists of goals and really only having my toe in the water. Don’t do that. Make the list when you’re ready to. Think about it and chew on your ideas. THEN write them down. They’ll go much further, trust me on that.

Alright, well these types of goals seem pretty self-explanatory, but in case you’re still confused, I’ll give you some examples. Long-term goals are super forgiving. Some of my long-term goals are to become a professional songwriter and work in that industry (but behind the scenes), start several successful businesses mostly non-profit for-profit type businesses with a strong online platform, become a stronger creative and learn better how to discipline creativity, and duh travel. Some of those are much more concrete than others, some are more developed, and some are just plain expected (like travel). Short-term goals are really where the magic starts happening. Some of mine include building my online audience using my blog, and social media, become a better photographer through resources online and studying other photographers, finish schoolstay alive, and maybe even paint my nails finally (it’s the little things, right?). When you list off your goals, make your long-term goals first. Dream big! Seriously, you’ll never ever do something if you don’t think of it first. After you’ve successfully made a list of long-term goals spanning anywhere from 3 to 10 in number, make short term goals. If you have quite a few long-term goals (in that case, go you!), pick two or three and make short-term goals based on those.

What this has done for me: I keep these lists where I can see them, in a notebook I frequent often, hung up on a bulletin board, in a note on my computer, anywhere I’ll see them. As a student, World Religions doesn’t seem like it does much for my Marketing degree, but with my goals up where I can see, something that seems like a waste of time suddenly has more meaning. If it’s not in the content (which in a small way, it is), it’s in the 3 more credits that bring me that much closer to my Bachelor’s. I can’t wait to wake up the next morning and begin working on my new goals. Seriously, it’s magic (you knooooow).

The Power of the List

Secondly, lists can do wonders for time management. I’m extremely unconventional in the fact that a meticulous daily schedule actually derails my day. I’ve had to do those for school and it just ruins my motivation and productivity. If you’re the same way, and a strict schedule actually stresses you out and makes you watch YouTube more, don’t be ashamed! Find ways to manage your time differently. I do this by making a list of tasks to accomplish every single day. I do this either the night before or in the morning before I start anything. Since I have so many ‘sections’ of my life, I usually make a To-Do list per section. For me that is School, BlogCollegePlus Work, and Social Media. I sometimes throw in a Misc. section for tasks like cleaning the bathroom or going grocery shopping, or even something bigger, like applying for a school or a job. Above all of that, I list my daily devotions and working out, two things that I should always start my day with. But of course, I’m not perfect, it doesn’t happen as often as it should, let’s be honest. BUT I find I do it more often when it’s written on my list.

What this has done for me: Even if I have a page filled to overflowing with To-Do items, it gives me a place to start. I can still utilize a schedule and just schedule in blocks of time to be spent per section. Those moments when all I want to do is scroll through Facebook or watch YouTube, I have no excuse like, “I have so much to do that I don’t know where to start.” Everything I need to do is right in front of me. Nuff said.

The Power of the List

Third (congratulations for getting here, by the way). I like making what I call “Creativity Lists”. I’ve done this a handful of times, and I really should do it more, honestly. A few months ago, I just filled a page with phrases and words that I thought would sound good in a song. I had reached a point where the songs just weren’t coming, no matter how hard I tried. As I looked at pictures to jog my creativity, my page of potential lyrics blossomed before my eyes. Multiple songs were born based on one single phrase, and some of my most challenging and artistic songs too! Yesterday, just on a whim, I did something similar and started listing random words. After about ten, I realized that every word I listed was some sort of theme in my life. I came up with 68 and if that doesn’t tell you how much I try to do, I don’t know what does. When I reviewed my list, I realized that I could probably write a blog post on every single word I had written. They may not all be super quality posts or even very interesting, but most of the blog posts that would actually work I would never have thought of without that Creativity List.

What this has done for me: All creatives have flow times and empty times. These lists are a life-saver during the empty times. It’s an exercise that is worth at least trying, and usually it only takes 10 minutes at the most! (If you don’t believe me, try it. See how long it takes you to write just ten words or phrases while scrolling through Pinterest.) (No really, I’m serious.)

>>>>>>>>>>>>

These are just three of the ways that lists have had a powerful impact in my motivation, my productivity, and my life. Which ones do you use already? If you haven’t tried the Creativity List, try that if nothing else. It’s short and sweet and can make a huge difference in your inspiration boost!

And thanks for getting all the way to the end. Yes. Yes I did just write a 1200 word post on ‘lists’. Go me.

Turn Heads with a Cropped Hoodie! D.I.Y.

Are you like me where hoodies do absolutely nothing for you and they hang in your closet? For me, it’s a combination of just liking dressing up more often and the fact that I have poofy curly hair that just doesn’t work with a hood. Well if you can relate with me on at least the first point, I have a solution inspired by this video. We all have hoodies that mean something to us, but that we never really wear (or maybe it’s just me, I don’t know), so here is a solution to that dilemma. Turn heads with a hoodie? Yup, that’s my goal.

Cropped Hoodie idea! Do it with old hoodies that might be sentimental or mean something. Then you can still wear them, and they'll be fashionable!

There you go! So easy, you figured it out without those pictures. If you like this idea, make sure you pin it! And if you follow me on instagram, you probably already saw it:) But if you don’t, follow me here!

How to Break the Mold and Be an Independent Thinker // from The Entrepreneur

Okay so I’m going to go kind of mainstream here, but it could work itself out if some of you haven’t heard of one of my favorite ever magazines, The Entrepreneur. If you are interested in even just creating (not even a business necessarily), you need to spend some time on TheEntrepreneur.com or at least follow them on Twitter or like them on Facebook. AND, if you are a student of any kind or young and aspiring to create and innovate and possibly start a business, don’t forget to follow The Young Entrepreneur too! (Twitter // Facebook) I’m not joking about this, I’m dead serious. The Entrepreneur is a resource that you don’t want to miss and you shouldn’t miss! They have new free content out constantly and it is always amazing and offers valuable insight from people who have been there and done it.

OKAY, now to my actual point. The other day, I clicked somewhere (I have like five different social media options because I’m OBSESSED) and found this article on The Entrepreneur entitled, “How to Break the Mold and Be an Independent Thinker.” Instantly, my attention was grabbed. As a creative who is also obsessed with other creatives who also knows the unconventional (but now conventional) urban wisdom that “Great artists steal,” I still want to be able to create something new and different and striking. This article was everything I wanted to expect and more. Three simple ideas have already started to change the way I think about things. I really should write them down everywhere so I never, ever forget them.

So now it’s your turn! This article takes about five minutes to read, but if you are an aspiring or even professional creative, these thoughts from Nadia Goodman on The Entrepreneur could change the way you think about creating for the better. Read the article here!

And while you’re at it, read the latest posts from The Entrepreneur and tell me what you think! Comment below or tweet me (@AubryStewart)!

Weekly Wishes, #1

The Nectar Collective

Ready to be amazed? TWO POSTS IN ONE FREAKING DAY! Yep, this is happening.

One of the blogs I follow on Bloglovin (follow me here) called The Nectar Collective has a weekly link up that I just found out about (I’ve been late on checking my blogs, okay?). It is called Weekly Wishes. Basically you just list your big (or small) goals for the week. The best part, I think, is that you MUST visit the person who linked up directly before you and leave them an encouraging comment. I think it’s great, because I’m all about building online relationships, especially with people who are doing something similar to you. And duh, I’m pretty much the biggest goal setter I know. Every single day I have to write down my 35 goals for the day. And I find motivation and direction by listing out my big life goals (I’m actually going to write a blog post about this to come out on Thursday). Anyways, I hope you enjoy these, AND please leave me a comment with at least one of your goals for the week.

(I may not do this weekly link up every week, but I will do this fairly regularly, so stay tuned for that!)

GOALS FOR THIS WEEK:

one. Pack for Colorado early. I always feel like when I go on trips, I am packing right up until the moment I leave. That has to happen to an extent because I usually bring stuff I use on a daily basis. But sometimes it gets to the last hour before I have to leave and I’m frantically cleaning up and stuffing things into my suitcase. My goal is to be packed and ready to go on Monday, late-morning. I leave early Tuesday morning (!!!).

two. Get blog posts ready to post for two weeks. I have everything planned out until like the middle of May (yeah, that happened last night), and now I know exactly what to write and plan for. I’ll need to have most of my crap ready for next week since I’ll be gone for most of it, and I’d like to be ahead even after I get back!

three. Live in the moment. I have so much going on that it’s easy to think about everything but what I’m doing at the moment. My goal is to focus hard on what every moment holds and worry about other things later. Can you relate?

four. Start rolling on my new blog design. I mentioned yesterday that I am going to be moving my blog to a domain and getting it all pretty and stuff. Ugh, I hate this blog design. I really do. I’ve begun the process of experimenting and building the new one, and I can’t wait for you all to see it! I haven’t actually bought the domain yet, so I’m open to ideas for what my blog should be called! Right now I’m kind of thinking “Curly Aubry” since that kind of explains me and my life in two words. God knew what He was doing when He gave me curly hair. I have a messy, curly life too! Anyways, I flipping can’t wait to get things moved over there, but if you have any ideas, please please please let me know!!! (I’m planning on continuing with daily posts, it just will be called something different.)

five. I read on someone’s blog yesterday (sorry, I can’t remember who) that they often do fasts from certain things in their life. For instance, Facebook, or something along those lines. When I read that, I suddenly felt liberated. Seriously, how nice would it be to spend a month away from Facebook (since I really don’t think it adds anything to the marketing game today anyways) and just focus on everything important. (If my parents are reading this, they are probably chuckling right now.) It felt so good to think that way that I didn’t check Facebook this morning. Then I realized, however, that I use Facebook to communicate with the people I’m working with right now via a Facebook group. It makes sense for all of us, really, to communicate that way. So fasting from Facebook for a month is out for me. However, here’s my goal that comes out of all of this. I want to demonstrate discipline when it comes to Facebook. My notification count shouldn’t ever matter, and all I really have to look at is the sidebar where my groups are to see if there is anything new that I should know about. I could probably stand for just checking Facebook once a day (whoa.) and going on at other times only to post a question or a comment to my group. What has overtaken your life that you both should cut back on and would free your spirit a little more if you did? We’ve all got one!

Alright, so there you go! I’ll post an update hopefully sometime next week to let you know how this has gone. I always have goals, but there is something about writing them down and telling people about them that makes me that much more likely to follow through, you know?

Thanks for reading!

That Blessed Season, Spring

That Blessed Season, #Spring

I think we can all agree that getting through winter and staying motivated 100% of the time is one of the hardest feats to accomplish (at least as an average American, #letsbehonest). We sacrifice all that vitamin D and sunshine and light and warmth for nothing but frozen white crap that we get sick of the day after Christmas. It’s cold, it’s dark, it’s unnatural. I juuuuust can’t stand it.

I mean, I get it, some of you guys love winter. I have some friends who dread summer the way I dread winter (which is totally weird to me). Personally, I hate winter and I pretty much do all my living when it is over at least 80 degrees. What better way to spend the day than in the sun with lots of natural light (something I’ve been craving like nothing else), and warmth and bare feet? Now that I’m back in California, I spend half my day outside working with my dog hanging out next to me. Let’s hit the beach, go to the pool, travel around to soccer tournaments, and get some sun on my white skin! This California girl just can’t focus when she’s still cold three sweaters later.

Can anyone relate?

That Blessed Season, #Spring

But it’s the end of March (what the…?) and Spring is upon us! If you’re living in a colder place, your spring is probably more than wet right now, and I’m very sorry (just enjoy the green that comes after all the rain!). I’m lucky, I get to experience a warmer version of Spring>> my mom’s roses are blooming, I accidentally tanned the other day while doing school outside, and I just took a bunch of jumping pictures with my siblings at the pool. But we can all agree. There’s nothing like that itch we get when we see the first flower, or witness the first cloudless sky of the year, or get to roll our windows down and crank up our favorite song. You get me?

The end is near everybody! If you haven’t yet witnessed a spring day (in that case, I’m extremely sorry), know that it’s coming sooner than you think! And if you have had a spring day and you’re living a cold and rainy one today, don’t worry. July is coming. And then you’ll be one of those people who complains about how hot it is when it is 85 degrees. Yup.

That Blessed Season, #Spring

Enjoy the season you’re in right now, if you possibly can! Spring, even the rainy days of that blessed season, means new growth. Maybe it WILL rain for 6 days straight and you will get ants in your pants so bad you have to share them on Facebook. But I always enjoy the green terrain that is born out of that. Pretty beautiful.

What is Spring like where you live? And what are you doing to enjoy/get through it?

P.S. Thanks to my mom for growing these gorgeous flowers (because I would just kill them if it were up to me) (on accident, don’t worry) and thanks to our wonderful, apparently over-stocked neighbors for sharing your delicious fresh oranges!

100 Happy Days

100 HAPPY DAYS

Today I started another daily challenge (shoot me, shoot me now). If you haven’t heard of the 100 Happy Days challenge, basically what it is is a way for people to look for something good in their lives for 100 consecutive days. When you sign up for the challenge (here), you pick a preferred social media platform and promise to post a picture of something that makes you happy every single day. You can start whenever you want to and they’ll send you emails to keep you up on things. I would encourage you to sign up for the challenge! And if you don’t already, make sure you follow me on Instagram to keep up with my 100 Happy Days challenge. Tag me (@aubrystewart) so I can see your photos and follow you!

In other news, I’m beginning plans to move my blog to a domain. I knew I would do this eventually, and thought it wouldn’t come until next January, but I realized that it’s easier to move a smaller amount of followers to another blog than a larger amount. Hopefully that will be up and running within the next couple of weeks. Can’t wait to show you all that I’m planning!

Pool Day

Today I went to the pool. However, I did not get in the pool because the rest of California is smart (not smart?) and has decided that March is still too cold to swim (even this close to the equator). The pool was ice freezing. But my siblings are crazy and I took pictures of them. I had a whole bunch of fun doing this impromptu photoshoot, and so did they! Hope you enjoy!

What is something you do for fun in March? How do you get creative?
